George Sheehan running quotes: “The little voice inside”

It’s very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit.
Who was George Sheehan?
Put simply, a running legend.
As an athlete, Sheehan was accomplished. One example – he was the very first 50-year old to achieve a sub-5 minute mile.
But Sheehan’s own personal running achievements pale into significance next to his contribution to the wider running world. From the weekly column he wrote for his local paper for some 25 years, to the pulpit provided in his role as medical editor at Runner’s World, Sheehan passed on his wisdom to countless runners.
Alberto Salazar, arguably the most eminent coach of recent times, acknowledges Sheehan’s role emphatically:
“Read as much George Sheehan as you can get your hands on. All the keys to unlocking your potential and achieving your goals are right there in Dr Sheehan’s verses.”
George Sheehan was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1986, but continued to write. The great man passed away in 1993, just a few days short of his 75th birthday and with publication of his eighth and final book imminent.
His legend lives on.
